Keyboard for Sale

A chapter member's friend's mom decided about a year ago she wanted to learn to play the piano. So she bought a Technics Digital piano, model PR-170. She paid over $4000 for it. Well... (you guessed it), after a few lessons, she's changed her mind. Now she's getting ready to move into a retirement home and would just like to sell it to someone who would put it to good use. She's asking $2500 or best offer. They use one very similar to it at St. James. We're passing the word along, in case someone's looking for a good deal on a digital piano.

Multicultural Liturgy Forum

August 1-3, 2008

Take a look at this upcoming opportunity to be a part of a retreat experience that is focusing on Multicultural Liturgies.
To give you some background: a group, which included Brother Rufino Zaragosa, Fr. Ricky Manolo, Tony Gomez, as well as about 20 others, gathered at the NPM Regional Meeting in Sacramento a few years ago to discuss the state of multicultural liturgies and to share their experiences. Out of this discussion came the idea of an in depth discussion with liturgists and musicians who have three to five years experience with multicultural liturgies. Brother Rufino and a planning team have been organizing this effort and are calling this the "Multicultural Forum" to be held August 1-3, 2008 at Mission San Luis Rey Retreat Center in California. Rev. Mark Francis will be at this gathering and, according to Brother Rufino, Rev. Mark "hopes to join us, listen to our experiences/joys/concerns/frustrations/insights in ministering with a multicultural community. Part of the weekend together will be reviewing the publication Guidelines for Multicultural Liturgies (written by Rev. Mark Francis) and giving a 'lived commentary' on the material."

This gathering will focus specifically on the Anglo-dominant, Hispanic, and Vietnamese cultural groups so that the discussion can be more focused and in depth. They hope to have diocesan as well as parish representatives.

Rev. Mark Francis is a wonderful teacher, and his experience with the international Church will enliven the conversation.

The event is timed to lead up to the regional NPM convention in Los Angeles that begins on August 5!

New U.S. Music Document Now Available

Sing to the Lord

You may now view and download Sing to the Lord: Music in Divine Worship (PDF), a new set of guidelines for music in the liturgy approved overwhelmingly (88%) by the U.S. bishops in November. The document had originally been proposed as a legislative document, but the bishops opted instead to issue it as an official statement of the USCCB, which still required a two-thirds vote of Latin rite bishops.

Sing to the Lord is longer (more than 250 paragraphs) and more comprehensive than its predecessors. It addresses some topics not covered in earlier documents, treats other areas more expansively, incorporates the norms of recent official liturgical documents, and draws on the experience of celebrating the current “ordinary” form of the Mass for the past thirty-seven years.

The USCCB is planning to publish the document together with the Directory for Music and the Liturgy. These official norms for approval of texts for singing at the liturgy were adopted by the U.S. bishops in November 2006 and are still awaiting confirmation from the Vatican.

News, Notes & Key Changes

Keep in Mind

High-school students from around our diocese will be participating in DYMO Camp June 15 - June 21. [DYMO = Diocesan Youth Ministry Organization] This is a key opportunity for mentoring our young people, including musicians, forming them in faith, leadership skills, liturgy and more. Please include these students in your prayers as they prepare for and experience this intense, week-long part of their faith journey. If any youth from your community participate in DYMO Camp, ask them about their experience and involve them in the parish ministries!

DYMO Camp registration has been extended! Visit www.dymo.org for more information!
