Building the Parish Choir

with Bob Batastini

An NPM-GR Chapter Event

A 3-part Workshop | Being offered in two different locations!

Mondays: June 4 - 11 - 18 | 7:00-9:00 pm | at Prince of Peace Parish, Muskegon
Tuesdays: June 5 - 12 - 19 | 7:00-9:00 pm | at GR Catholic Central High School

The sessions will be identical in both locations, so that participants who must miss a session can attend the corresponding session on the previous or following day in the alternate location.

Church choirs typically consist of a diverse group of folks with varying degrees of singing ability and experience, and most are amateur singers. It’s the job of the director to form this group into a choir that is worthy of its place in the liturgy. This workshop will focus on the basic skills for achieving this goal.

It is a workshop primarily for choir directors, with accompanists, section leaders, and parish music coordinators also welcome. Participants are expected to have basic music reading skills. The class will form a choir for the three nights of this presentation. Participants from all churches are heartily welcome.

Session I: How do we sing? Vocal basics for amateur singers, simple approaches to achieving good blend, dealing with “problem” singers in a non-confrontational manner, plus successful methods for recruiting.

Session II: What do we sing? A focus on choosing and rehearsing appropriate repertoire that is well-suited to the resources of your particular group.

Session III: Why do we sing? The role of the choir in the worship. The choir as a source of inspiration and artistic beauty. Using the choir to stimulate and enhance congregational song without becoming a substitute for congregational singing.

Cost: $30 for the first participant from a parish; $20 for the second, and only $10 for each additional participant. All music included.
To register, send an email with the participants' names and parish, plus which location you'd like to attend, to Aline at aksnoeyink@gmail.com. Please register by May 7th, 2012.
